Our guest at today's meal - a critic for another publication - had eaten not once but twice at the new Malaysian restaurant in the West End's outrageously fashionable Sanderson Hotel.
Also, the food was no better than when the place was called Spoon.
All the better that we had arranged to meet at this prehistoric (1973) Malaysian.
The arrival in the last year, however, of Suka and Chelsea's Awana has boosted interest in Malaysian cuisine, and seems to have given the old-timer the courage to have a modern facelift.
It's high time this veteran oriental was placed firmly on London's culinary map.
Satay House Malaysian Restaurant review - does it serve the best ...

Though I am more than satisfied with Puji Puji's lamb satay, I thought I would give Satay House Malaysian Restaurant a try for two very simple reasons: it's the first name that turn up on Google with the keywords "satay London", and I have heard rave reviews of the restaurant from my friends who had been there.
After confirming with the waitress that the murtabak was freshly made and not prepared from frozen packs, we ordered the satay, murtabak, mee goreng, nasi lemak, nasi goreng kampung, sago gula melaka and bubur pulut hitam.
However, being drier, the long grain rice that Satay House used was more suitable for fried rice (nasi goreng).
However, given Satay House's proximity to Paddington train station, it would probably remained as one of London's favourite places for satay.

You’ve heard the only way to choose a starter is to go for the one the restaurant is named after, so you opt for six skewers of tender chicken and lamb served with a peanut sauce, cucumber and rice cubes.
Moving onto the main you’ve heard that things must be done in the right order.
You don’t want to be spoiling your sweet tomato lush lamb stuff (Mutton Mysore) by then having the frankly-not-up-to-scratch deep fried chicken (Ayam Goreng Bawang Putih) so you leave it till last.
In fact, you skip the fried chicken altogether and say hello to the unmistakably-fragrant whole mackerel in tamarind sauce (Ikan Panggang).
You supplement this with a small, repeat SMALL, portion of rice and a small, repeat SMALL, serving of stir fried choi sum in oyster sauce and chilli (Sawi Goreng) just so your five-a-day are covered.

This restaurant is very local to me so I thought I would try it out.
The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and I was instantly greeted by the friendly staff.
I chose to eat the tofu goreng and crispy noodles with vegetables instead of meat.
The tofu was incredible, it had this amazing peanut sauce... more
